Move and Store Workshop Materials: Plan Loads and Clearances First

Decide whether the job is storing long stock, moving pallets or lifting equipment. Plan load limits and the route before selecting a machine.

Move and Store Workshop Materials: Plan Loads and Clearances First

Project guide

Different material problems need different solutions

A bundle of long boards needs stable storage. A pallet needs movement space and equipment rated for pallet handling. An overhead lift requires approved support and a controlled lifting path. Treating them as a single problem because all involve heavy objects is an easy way to choose the wrong equipment.

Start with what must move, how often it moves and where it must finish. Then draw its complete route. For fixed lumber storage, focus on wall capacity and supported length. For pallet movement, review load center, floor conditions, aisle width and available operating height. For any suspended load, verify the mounting and permitted use.

Practical selection checklist

  • Record the heaviest load including packaging and its center of gravity.
  • Measure aisles, doorways, turning areas, floor conditions and available height.
  • Match the equipment rating and installation requirements to the specific handling task.

The goal is a safe process, not a recommendation to buy every type of handling product. A pallet stacker and a wall rack serve distinct applications and have very different operating requirements.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use a pallet stacker to store long boards?

A stacker is built to handle suitable palletized loads within its rated operating conditions. Long loose stock requires a separate handling and storage assessment.

Does a rack's per-tier rating prove my wall is strong enough?

No. Installation, fixings and structural capacity must be appropriate to the applied loads.

What matters more than lifting height?

The load, center of gravity, support, floor conditions, access route and rated operating mode. Height alone does not establish suitability.
